Opening Paint Cans: Using An Opener The Right Way

There are several ways to open a paint can with a paint can opener. The paint can opener is a small, inexpensive tool that can be used to effortlessly pry the lid off the can. To use it, push the flat end into the gap between the can and the lid, and pry the lid off by rotating the opener around the entire lid. You can also use a flathead screwdriver, a painter's tool, a putty knife, or a bread knife to open a paint can. Using a paint can opener

If you don't have a paint can opener, you can use a flathead screwdriver. Place the head of the screwdriver in the gap where the lid meets the can and lift up gently. Continue all the way around the can until you can remove the whole lid. Be careful not to put too much pressure on the lid when using a screwdriver, or it can get deformed.

You can also use a putty knife, which is stiff and not too bendy. Use the side of the knife to maximise your surface area. A painter's tool, such as a 5-in-1 or 7-in-1, can also be used to open paint cans. Use the short, flat part of the tool to wedge and pry the lid up from the can.

Using a flathead screwdriver

A flat-head screwdriver is a great tool to open a paint can. Firstly, check the edge of the paint can lid to notice a small gap around it. Place the tip of the flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the can and the lid as far as it will go. You can also use the screwdriver to scrape off any dried paint that might be holding the lid on.

Next, press the handle of the screwdriver downwards with a fair amount of pressure. This will help lift a part of the paint can lid. Repeat this process several times in different locations around the lid until it is fully detached from the can. Be careful not to apply too much pressure on the lid when using a screwdriver as it can get deformed.

If the lid does not come off the can in one motion, reposition your screwdriver and try again. You can also use a hammer to tap the end of the screwdriver to apply more force towards opening the can. Once the lid is fully detached, carefully lift it away from the can.

Using a putty knife

To open a paint can with a putty knife, you'll need a stiff, rigid, and narrow putty knife that is not too bendy. A painter's 5-in-1, 7-in-1, or 15-in-1 tool can also be used as a putty knife.

First, insert the edge or front edge of the putty knife under the lip of the can's lid. You can also place it in the crack between the lid and the can. Then, apply gentle yet firm pressure to raise the lid, using the side of the knife to maximise surface area and gain more leverage. Move the knife slowly around the edge of the can, rotating the can as you go, until the lid is fully loosened and can be lifted off.

If the paint can is old and has dried paint around the rim, you can use the putty knife to score and break up the dried paint. Alternatively, you can use a screwdriver or opening tool to remove the dried paint.

Be careful not to use too much force when prying open the lid, as this can cause the lid to fly off and splash paint.

Using a 5-in-1 tool

A 5-in-1 tool is a multipurpose painter's tool that can be used to open a paint can. It can also serve as a putty knife, a roller scraper, a chisel, a nail puller, and a corner cleaner.

To open a paint can using a 5-in-1 tool, start by placing the short, flat part of the tool in the crack between the lid and the can. Then, gently lift the tool, rotating the can to move it around the entire lid. This will help you detach the lid without damaging the seal.

It is important to work slowly and methodically when opening a paint can, especially if it is a brand new can. This allows excess paint to drain back into the can and prevents the lid from getting stuck.
