Cropping Images In Ms Paint: Keep Only The Selection

Cropping an image in Microsoft Paint allows you to trim the border of an image and keep only the portion within the selection frame. There are two main methods to crop an image in MS Paint: Rectangular Selection and cropping by dragging the edges. This can be done by first opening the image in MS Paint, selecting the portion of the image you want to keep, and then cropping the image.

Open the image in MS Paint

To open an image in MS Paint on Windows 10, click the Start button and scroll to the W section within the programs list. You can also find Paint inside the Windows Accessories folder. On Windows 11, click the Start button, then All Apps, and find Paint in the P section. Once Paint is open, select File > Open or press Ctrl + O to browse for your image. Another way to open an image in MS Paint is to right-click on the image file and select Open with > Paint.

Now that your image is open in Paint, it's time to select the area you want to keep. From the Home tab, select the Selection tool. This will allow you to draw a frame around the part of the image you want to retain. You can also use the Rectangular Selection tool to click and drag your cursor over the part of the image that you want to keep. Ensure that you are satisfied with the placement of the crop before releasing the mouse button.

If your image is large and you want to zoom in on a specific area before cropping, you can use the Zoom in button in the View tab. This will allow you to focus on a particular section of the image before making your selection.

Choose the selection tool

Once you have the desired area selected, click "Crop" and your image will be cropped to the selected area. Clicking this button will remove everything outside of the selected area, leaving only the part of the image that's inside.

Draw a frame around the area to keep

Then, input the desired number of pixels for either the width or height, leaving the other value unchanged. Now, you can adjust the other value by dragging the edges of the image.

Save the image

To save an image in Microsoft Paint, follow these steps:

• Open the image file in Microsoft Paint. On Windows 10, click the Start button and scroll to the W section within the programs list. For Windows 11, click the Start button, then All Apps, and find Paint in the P section. Alternatively, you can open the image file by selecting File > Open or pressing Ctrl + O to browse for your image.
• Crop the image to the desired size using one of the two methods: Rectangular Selection or cropping by dragging the edges. For Rectangular Selection, go to the Select option at the top left of the window and choose "Rectangular Selection" from the drop-down menu. Then, click and drag your cursor over the part of the image you want to keep. If you want to start over, click anywhere outside the area surrounded by the dotted lines. For cropping by dragging the edges, simply adjust the image borders accordingly.
• Once you have the desired area selected, click "Crop." This will remove any portions of the image outside the selected area.
• Save the image by selecting "File" > "Save" or pressing Ctrl + S on your keyboard.

Note: If you want to resize the image while maintaining the original aspect ratio, you can use the Resize tool in conjunction with the cropping feature. First, open the Resize tool and ensure the Main Aspect Ratio is selected. Then, input the desired number of pixels for either width or height, leaving the other value unchanged. You can then adjust the other value by cropping the image using the Rectangular Selection tool or dragging the edges.
