Importing files into Paint 3D

Paint 3D allows users to import both 2D and 3D images. To insert an image, select Menu from the top left of Paint 3D, then choose Insert. From there, you can select the file that you want to import into the canvas. Paint 3D supports various file types, including 2D pictures like PNG, JPG, JFIF, GIF, TIF/TIFF, and ICO files, as well as 3MF, STL, PLY, OBJ, and other 3D models.

Additionally, you can insert 3D models included with the Paint 3D program by selecting the 3D library from the menu at the top. You can search or browse for the object you want and select it to import it onto your canvas.

If you want to use an image as your canvas background, you can download an image file to your PC and import it into Paint 3D. Click the "Stickers" icon on the toolbar, then click "Custom Stickers" on the sticker pane. Next, click the "Add sticker" button, select your image file, and position and resize it to match your canvas. Finally, click the "Stamp" button to apply the image to your canvas.

For 3D files, you can import them by dragging and dropping them onto the canvas or the All Sides View palette. Paint 3D supports various 3D file types, including FBX, 3MF, 6KT, 6KH, LWO, LWS, OBJ, GLB, gITF, and VRM.

You can also import models from Microsoft's Remix 3D website. Simply select a model on the website, click the "Remix in Paint 3D" button, and sign in with your Microsoft account. The chosen model will then open in Paint 3D.

Using the Remix 3D community

The Remix 3D community is a platform created by Microsoft for users to browse, distribute, and download 3D objects. The website features a free library with thousands of 3D objects that can be used in virtual reality and augmented reality applications. The service is integrated with and supports Paint 3D, allowing users to upload their own 3D models to the collection.

To access the Remix 3D community in Paint 3D, launch the app from the Start menu, desktop, or taskbar. Click the "Remix 3D" or "3D Objects" button near the top of the window, then click "Get more models." Sign in with your desired account and click "Continue." From here, you can browse the available 3D models and add them to your project by clicking the "Place in project" button, which looks like a downward-pointing arrow.

You can also create your own boards in the Remix 3D community to keep your models organized. To do this, click the "My stuff" button near the top of the pane, then click the dropdown arrow next to "Models" and select "Boards." Click "New board" and enter a name and description for your board. Choose a privacy option and add any relevant tags before saving. Now, when you find a model you like, you can add it to your board by clicking the "Add to boards" button, which looks like a "+" sign.

If you've created something in Paint 3D that you want to share with the Remix 3D community, open your creation in a new canvas and click the folder icon in the top-left corner of the top menu. Name your creation, add a description, and use descriptive tags so others can find it. Finally, choose a color for the background and adjust the light wheel if desired.

Selecting colours

Unfortunately, I could not find specific information on how to add your own module to Paint 3D. However, I did find information on selecting colours in Paint 3D.

Below the texturing options in the side menu is where you select the colour that the Paint 3D tool should use. Choose any of the pre-selected colours from the menu of 18 or pick a temporary current colour by choosing the colour bar. From there, define the colour by its RGB or hex values.

Use the eyedropper tool to pick a colour that's already present on the canvas. This is useful when you want to paint using the same colour that already exists on the model but are unsure which colour was used.

You can also make your own custom colours to use later by choosing "Add colour". You can create up to six custom colours.

Every tool but "Fill" lets you adjust the thickness of the brush so you can control how many pixels should be coloured at once. Some tools let you choose as small as a 1px area to colour with each stroke.

Opacity refers to the transparency level of the tool, where 0% is completely transparent. For example, if the opacity of the marker is set to 10%, it will be very light, while 100% shows its full colour. Every art tool in Paint 3D can have a matte, gloss, dull metal, or polished metal texture effect. The metal options are useful for things like a rusty or copper look. Matte provides a regular colour effect, while the gloss texture is a little darker and creates more of a shiny look.

Saving your work

If you want to save your Paint 3D projects in a different location, you have a few options. You can export your creations as JPEG files and choose where to save them on your device. Additionally, you can save your projects to OneDrive, a cloud storage service provided by Microsoft. This is a convenient option if you want to access your files from multiple devices or share them with others.

In case you accidentally close Paint 3D without saving, there are a few ways to recover your work. Paint 3D has an AutoRecover feature that automatically saves your work every few minutes. You can find these autosaved files in the AutoRecover folder within the Local State folder. Additionally, you can check the local app data folder, as Paint 3D projects are saved there as well.

If you're experiencing issues with saving your projects, there are some troubleshooting steps you can take. First, ensure that you have the necessary permissions to save files on your computer. If that doesn't solve the problem, you can try running the Windows Store apps troubleshooter, which can help identify and fix issues with Windows Store apps, including Paint 3D. Resetting Paint 3D can also help fix any saving issues you may be encountering.
