The artist's biography
Leonid Afremov was a Mexican–Israeli modern impressionistic artist known for his unique style using a palette knife and oils. He was born in Vitebsk, Belarus (then the USSR) on 12 July 1955 to a Jewish family of shoemakers and metallurgical engineers. He received a traditional Jewish education and spoke Yiddish at home, despite facing government anti-Semitism.
Afremov showed an early talent for painting and was encouraged by his parents to pursue his artistic interests. He attended art classes in school and took private lessons from local artists, including Barowski. After graduating with honours from high school in 1973, he studied in the arts and graphics department at the Vitebsk Education Institute, where he was introduced to the work of Chagall, Picasso, Dali, Modigliani, and 19th-century French Impressionism.
In 1990, Afremov and his family moved to Israel, where he worked as a sign designer and frame maker. He continued to paint, mostly using watercolours and acrylics, and began to develop his distinctive style of knife painting. Despite facing discrimination due to his Russian immigrant status in Israel, he persisted in his artistic endeavours.
In 2002, Afremov moved to the United States, first to New York and then to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, due to health issues caused by the cold weather. During this period, he struggled to find artistic freedom as he was constrained by the demands of the galleries and the need to make a living. However, in 2004, he discovered eBay, which provided him with a platform to sell his paintings directly to art lovers worldwide. This marked the beginning of his true artistic journey, as he finally had the freedom to explore his artistic vision and paint what he truly wanted.
Afremov's unique style and optimistic outlook are reflected in his paintings, which often depict autumn walks in parks, landscapes, city scenes, seascapes, flowers, and portraits. His work is known for its bright colours and positive emotions, bringing joy and warmth to those who view them.
