What You'll Learn

KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer is a fast-drying, water-based primer
Before applying the primer, surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of any dust, chalk, oil, grease, wax, polish, mould, mildew, loose peeling paint, rust, or other foreign substances. For mould or mildew-covered surfaces, it is recommended to wash the area with a mildew remover, rinse with water, and allow it to dry before priming. When working with masonry, brick, stucco, or plaster, ensure that the surface is aged and cured for at least 30 days before applying the primer.
The KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer dries to the touch in 30 minutes and can be recoated or top-coated with latex or oil-based paint within an hour. It is important to maintain proper ventilation during application and drying, as the product contains chemicals that can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation.
This primer can be tinted to match your desired paint colour, although it is not necessary. Tinting the primer can help achieve colour matching with fewer coats of paint. When tinting, it is recommended to use a tinting machine and to tint the primer to a lighter shade than the desired topcoat colour.
The KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer is an effective solution for covering light to medium stains and preparing surfaces for painting. By following the recommended preparation and application guidelines, users can achieve desirable results and enhance the adhesion and appearance of their chosen paint colour.

It is not recommended for flooring
KILZ 2® ALL-PURPOSE Primer is a fast-drying, water-based, multi-surface primer-sealer-stain blocker with excellent adhesion, mildew resistance, sealing properties, and a very mild odour. It can be used on interior and exterior surfaces, including woodwork, drywall, plaster, paneling, masonry, brick, painted metal, and properly prepared glossy surfaces. However, it is not recommended for flooring.
While KILZ 2® is a versatile and effective primer for a variety of surfaces, there are specific considerations and limitations to its use. One important limitation is that it is not intended for use on flooring. This restriction is likely due to the unique characteristics and requirements of floor surfaces.
Flooring typically endures more wear and tear than other surfaces, such as walls or ceilings. It experiences constant foot traffic, friction, and, in some cases, the weight of furniture or appliances. As a result, floor coatings need to be exceptionally durable and resistant to abrasion.
Additionally, flooring may have specific performance requirements, such as slip resistance or the ability to withstand heavy loads. KILZ 2® primer may not be formulated to meet these specialised needs, and using it on flooring could potentially result in unsatisfactory performance and durability.
Furthermore, different types of flooring materials may have distinct characteristics and requirements. For example, wooden floors often require finishes that penetrate the wood and enhance its natural beauty, while also providing protection and durability. On the other hand, concrete floors may need coatings that can withstand their naturally porous and alkaline nature.
In summary, while KILZ 2® ALL-PURPOSE Primer is a capable and adaptable product for a wide range of surfaces, it is not intended for use on flooring. This restriction is likely due to the unique challenges and requirements of floor surfaces, which demand specialised coatings that can provide exceptional durability, performance, and adherence to specific functional and aesthetic needs.

It can be tinted to match the topcoat colour
KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer is a water-based, multi-surface primer-sealer-stainblocker with excellent adhesion, mildew resistance, sealing properties, and a very mild odour. It can be used on interior and exterior surfaces, including woodwork, drywall, plaster, paneling, masonry, brick, painted metal, and properly prepared glossy surfaces. Notably, it is not recommended for flooring applications.
When it comes to tinting the primer, it is essential to understand its purpose and benefits. Primer acts as a base coat and helps the paint adhere better to the surface being painted. Tinting the primer is not mandatory but is highly recommended, especially when transitioning from a darker to a lighter shade or working with dark, deep, and rich colours. By tinting the primer, you can achieve better colour matching with your desired topcoat colour, reducing the number of coats required.
Most primers are white and can be tinted to a limited colour palette. It is generally recommended to tint the primer to a slightly lighter shade than the desired topcoat colour. This helps ensure that the topcoat paint achieves its true colour in fewer coats.
When tinting KILZ primer, it is best to follow the label instructions. You can have the primer tinted at most paint stores or home centres with tinting capabilities. These stores typically use tint machines with specific colour formulations already programmed into their software. Alternatively, you can manually mix tint into the primer, but it is crucial to ensure that the tint is compatible with the primer and that you follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper usage.
By understanding the benefits of tinting the primer and following the recommended guidelines, you can achieve optimal results and enhance the overall appearance of your painted surfaces.
