Exporting transparent images

To export transparent images in Paint Tool SAI, it is recommended to save your art as a .PSD file. This is because certain free image programs are compatible with .PSD files and can be used to open and edit them. One such program is GIMP, which is completely free to use and compatible with Windows and Mac.

Once you have downloaded and installed GIMP, open the program and then open your .PSD file in it. Click on "File", then "Export As". Your file will display as [filename].psd. Remove the .psd and type in .png instead. Alternatively, you can click on the "Select File Type" button at the bottom of the dialog box and scroll through the list to find .png. It should now have a file extension.

A set of options will pop up. Make sure you have "Save gamma" and "Save color values from transparent pixels" ticked, along with the other defaults. Finally, export your image.

If your SAI supports transparency, a dialog box should pop up after you save it. Select 32bpp ARGB (Each pixel has opacity) for a transparent image. Hide any background layers, and then click on "Canvas", hover over "Background", and select "Transparent (Bright checker)". If your drawing is transparent, it should show immediately with some grey checkerboxes. For a very high-resolution picture, you may have to zoom in to see them. Export and save the file as a .png.
