Creating new layers
Paint Tool SAI is a lightweight Japanese digital painting program that is popular among artists due to its simplicity and range of tools. Using layers in Paint Tool SAI is simple and can help you achieve your artistic vision faster.
By default, you can find the layers in Paint Tool SAI on the left side of the screen, right beside the tools panel. You can change the position of your Layer Panels by clicking on Window > Show Navigator and Layer Panels on Right Side.
To create a new layer, you can use one of the two following icons in the Layer Panel:
- Normal layer: This is the basic layer that is most commonly used, and it allows you to draw with any of the tools presented.
- Linework layer: Within this layer, you will get a different set of tools. Instead of being able to draw freely, you will have specific tools with which you can draw. This layer is most commonly used for creating perfectly straight lines and curves.
Another way to add a layer is to click on Layer in the top menu and select the type of layer you wish to create. You can also create folders for your layers by clicking on Layer > New Layer Folder. Once you create the layer folder, simply click and drag the layers you want to put into that folder. You can also rename the layer folder by double-clicking on the name.
If you wish to merge two or more layers into one, select those layers and press Ctrl, then click on the + icon in the Layer Panel. You can also merge layers by going to Layers > Merge Layers.

Layer types
Paint Tool SAI is a lightweight Japanese digital painting program that is popular among artists due to its simplicity and range of tools. The Layer Panel can be found on the left side of the screen, beside the tools panel. You can change the position of your Layer Panels by clicking on Window > Show Navigator and Layer Panels on Right Side.
There are two main types of layers: Normal and Linework. The Normal layer is the basic layer that is most commonly used, and it allows you to draw with any of the tools presented. The Linework layer provides a different set of tools, allowing you to draw straight lines and curves.
To create a new layer, you can use the icons in the Layer Panel or click on Layer in the top menu and select the type of layer you wish to create. You can also create layer folders by clicking on Layer > New Layer Folder. To merge two or more layers, select those layers and press Ctrl, then click on the + icon in the Layer Panel.
Layer Modes allow you to blend two or more layers. Normal Mode covers the layer beneath with a new layer on top without mixing their colours. Multiply, Shade, and Screen Modes are used for darkening and lightening pictures. Overlay Mode combines Multiply and Screen Modes, making light parts lighter and dark parts darker. Lumi&Shade works similarly, adding brightness and glow. Binary is the easiest mode, covering everything in black, but changing the opacity can change its colour completely.

Deleting layers
If you want to erase everything from a particular layer without completely deleting it, you can select that layer and click on "Erase Selected Layers" in the Layer Panel. This will clear all the content from the selected layer without removing the layer itself.
It's important to note that you should always check certain things before deleting anything on a layer. Ensure that the layer is not locked, the correct tool is selected, and there are no active transparent colours or other settings that might interfere with the deletion.
Additionally, if you want to hide a layer temporarily without deleting it, you can use the eye icon next to each layer in the panel to toggle its visibility. This can be useful if you want to see the results without the elements of a specific layer interfering.
Keep in mind that digital art can be unpredictable, and accidental deletions or software glitches can occur. It's always a good idea to save your work frequently and back it up to avoid losing significant progress.

Layer folders
To create a new layer folder, click on 'Layer' in the top menu and select 'New Layer Folder'. Once you've created the folder, simply click and drag the layers you want to put into it. You can rename the layer folder by double-clicking on its name.
If you want to merge two or more layers within a folder into one, select those layers while pressing Ctrl, then click on the + icon in the Layer Panel. You can also merge layers by going to 'Layers' and selecting 'Merge Layers'. Remember that if you don't have two or more layers selected when clicking on 'Layers' > 'Merge Visible Layers', you will merge all the visible layers in Paint Tool SAI.
Above the Layer Panel, you'll find Layer Effects, where you can access various textures and effects that you can apply separately to each layer. You can also adjust the intensity and scale of textures, as well as the width and intensity of effects. Paint Tool SAI comes with several built-in textures and effects, but you can also download more for free or create your own.

Layer modes
The Multiply, Shade, and Screen modes are used for darkening and lightening pictures. The Screen mode has the opposite effect of Multiply. These layer modes are used for shadows and highlights. Overlay mode combines Multiply and Screen modes, so light parts beneath this layer mode become lighter, and dark parts become darker. Lumi&Shade works in a similar way, but this mode adds even more brightness and glow.
Binary is the simplest mode, covering everything in black. However, changing the opacity of the layer with Binary mode will change its colour completely. Preserve Opacity makes all lines and fills of a layer locked, so you won't deviate from its edges and always paint inside the lines. Clipping Group acts like a mask, and when you paint on the top layer with Clipping Group turned on, your strokes will always be just inside the painted area of the layer beneath.
