What You'll Learn

Using the Crop Tool
The Crop Tool is one of the most used tools in image processing. It allows you to trim unwanted areas, resize your image, and fine-tune its structure.
To use the Crop Tool in PaintShop Pro, first, select it from the Tools toolbar. By default, a crop rectangle will appear on the image, and the area outside the crop rectangle will be shaded. You can adjust the size of the crop area by dragging any of the handles or edges. To reposition the crop rectangle, place the cursor inside and drag.
You can also use a preset crop size by choosing an option from the Presets drop-list on the floating toolbar for the Crop tool, or from the drop-list on the Tool Options palette. If you want to use a composition guide, click the Composition Guide button on the floating toolbar, and choose a guide from the drop-list.
When you are happy with the way your photo is "framed" with the Crop rectangle, you can apply it by clicking on the green checkmark to crop the photo itself, or you can click the second button, which will crop your photo as a new image, leaving the original intact.
Additionally, you can select an area within the image and then crop the image to the selection borders. You can also create a new image from the cropped area.

Repositioning the Crop Rectangle
You can also resize the rectangle by dragging any of the handles or edges. If you want to resize the rectangle proportionally, you can check the "Maintain aspect ratio" checkbox in the Tools options.
The crop rectangle can also be rotated. To do this, hover close to a corner node or use the node attached to the centre of the rectangle. Before version X9, rotating the crop rectangle would rotate the rectangle itself. However, since version 2018, the rotation will affect the photo while the crop rectangle stays in the same position.
If you want to use a preset crop size, you can choose from the Presets drop-list on the floating toolbar for the Crop tool or from the drop-list on the Tool Options palette.

Selecting a Preset Crop Size
PaintShop Pro provides you with the option to choose from a variety of preset crop sizes. The default crop rectangle format is set to "Free form", which allows you to choose any dimensions and proportions. However, you can also use one of the available presets. To do this, you can choose an option from the Presets drop-list on the floating toolbar for the Crop tool or from the drop-list on the Tool Options palette.
The floating toolbar has additional icons, and the options available to you will vary depending on your version of PaintShop Pro. In PSP2021, you can find the One step photo fix and the Depth of field options. To activate the Depth of field option, click and hold your cursor on the last icon for a few seconds, and a grid will appear. You can then choose which area you want as your focus point. You can also adjust the blur of the Depth of field and the size of the area in focus using the sliders.
If you want to use a composition guide, click the Composition Guide button on the floating toolbar. This button toggles the guide on and off, and you can choose a guide from the drop-list.
Once you are happy with your chosen preset crop size and any adjustments, click the Apply button on the Tool Options palette or on the floating toolbar for the Crop tool.

Crop to Selection
To crop to a selection, first, select an area within the image. The selection can be any shape. PaintShop Pro will then position a crop area rectangle around the irregularly shaped selection. If you crop to a selection that is feathered, the current background color fills in the feathered region of the selection.
Next, choose the Crop tool and click Current Selection in the Snap crop rectangle to group box on the Tool Options palette. Adjust the crop area as needed, and click Apply.
Note that if any layer has a solid-color (nontransparent) background, the entire layer or image is selected as the crop area.

Saving the Cropped Image
Once you are happy with how your photo is framed by the crop rectangle, you can apply the changes by clicking on the green checkmark, which will crop the photo itself. Alternatively, you can click the second button, which will crop your photo as a new image, leaving the original intact. To preserve the original photo, use the Save As command and save the cropped version of your image under a new filename.
If you are using PSPX2, you can save the cropped image as a new image by using the Save As function, which will leave your original image intact. You can also create a new image from the cropped area.
If you have scanned multiple images in one scanning session, you can use the crop tool to quickly separate each photo into an individual image file.
After cropping an image, you may notice that the Width and Height values on the Tool Options palette are each set at 0.100.
