Winter, a famous rescued bottlenose dolphin
Winter was a famous Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncates) who was rescued and brought to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in 2005. She was found as a calf, entangled in a crab trap in the coastal waters of Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, on December 9 or 10, and was estimated to be about two months old. The ropes cut off the blood supply to her tail, leading to necrosis and the eventual disintegration of her tail flukes.
Bottlenose dolphins in the wild with no tail are at risk of serious injury or death. However, Winter adapted to her new physical form and learned to swim in a different pattern, similar to that of fish and snakes. She was even hand-fed by vets and volunteers in her first few days at the aquarium.
Irish prosthetist Kevin Carroll and a team of experts, including Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics, Inc., Dr. Mike Walsh, and CMA's world-class Animal Care Team, designed a prosthetic tail for Winter. After a year and a half of designing and testing, Winter was fitted with her first artificial tail in August 2007. It was made of simple silicone and plastic. Winter was only the second captive dolphin to ever receive an artificial tail.
Winter's story inspired millions of people around the world, including those with disabilities. She also starred in the 2011 film Dolphin Tale, which was based on her rescue and pioneering of her prosthetic tail. A sequel, Dolphin Tale 2, was released in 2014. Winter portrayed herself in the films.
