To upload your FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) results to DNA Painter, you must first download your DNA match data into a CSV document. You can then copy and paste the data from this document into DNA Painter. Alternatively, you can copy and paste the detailed segment data from FTDNA. Note that if you transferred to FTDNA, you'll need to unlock their chromosome browser before you can download your data. Also, if you have a parent or known maternal/paternal relatives tested at FTDNA, there is a tool that lets you upload an additional file to help sort your data.

What You'll Learn

Download DNA match data as a CSV document
To download DNA match data as a CSV document from FamilyTreeDNA, you must first sign in to your kit. The procedure for doing so is outlined below:
MtDNA Data
- On your dashboard, locate the mtDNA Results & Tools widget.
- Click the "See More" button and select "Data Download" from the list menu.
- Your data will be downloaded as a CSV file.
Alternatively, you can access your mtDNA Matches page from your dashboard or navigation bar. On the mtDNA Matches page, click the orange CSV button in the lower right corner. The downloaded file will contain information such as the names, email addresses, earliest known ancestor, haplogroup, and match date of your mtDNA matches.
Y-DNA STR Results
- Sign in to your kit.
- On your dashboard, locate the Y-DNA Results & Tools widget.
- Click the "See More" button and select "Y-STR Results Mutations" from the list menu.
- Access the Y-STR Results page through your navigation bar or dashboard.
- On the Y-DNA Standard Y-STR Values page, scroll to the bottom and click the orange CSV button on the right side of the page.
- The file will be downloaded to your computer's default download location, typically the Downloads folder.
Family Finder Data
- Go to Results & Tools > Autosomal DNA > Download Raw Data on the navigation bar at the top of the page.
- Extract the CSV file from the GZ (zipped) file using compression/decompression software.
- Open the CSV file with a text-editing or spreadsheet program.
- The CSV file will contain data columns such as RSID, Chromosome, Position, and Result.
Once you have downloaded your DNA match data as a CSV file, you can upload it to DNA Painter. DNA Painter requires only the segment data, not your raw DNA data. If you transferred to ftDNA, ensure that you have unlocked their chromosome browser before downloading your data.

Copy and paste data into DNA Painter
To copy and paste data into DNA Painter, you'll need to first obtain your DNA data from a third-party site such as 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA, or Living DNA. You can then copy and paste the table with segment information directly into the DNA Painter 'Paint a new match' form. You can also copy and paste the data from the table view of the data.
If you are using FamilyTreeDNA, you should copy and paste the segments into the shared cM tool to get a revised total cM shared. This is because FamilyTreeDNA includes small segments that are very unlikely to be valid in their totals.
If you are using Gedmatch, you can log in and run the Tier 1 matching segment search on the relevant kit. Once the results have loaded, copy and paste the entire page into a spreadsheet or Google Sheet. Delete the top 20 or so lines of the file, leaving the line with 'Kit, Chr, Start Position, End Position, cM, SNPs, Name, Sex, Email' as the header row. Save this as a comma-separated-values (CSV) file and DNA Painter will recognize the format.
If you are using MyHeritage, you can access segment data by clicking 'Review DNA match' on the match you're interested in. Scroll down to the chromosome browser at the bottom of the page (you might need to be on a desktop device to see this section). Please note that as of October 2023, you may need to turn on two-factor authentication to access segment data.

Copy and paste detailed segment data on FTDNA
To copy and paste detailed segment data from FTDNA (FamilyTreeDNA) to DNA Painter, follow these steps:
- Log in to your FTDNA account.
- Navigate to the “Shared DNA Segments” page or the “Chromosome Browser.”
- Look for the “Detailed Segment Data” tab or table, which provides a breakdown of your shared DNA segment data.
- Click “Download All Segments” or “Download Segments” to save the detailed segment data as a CSV file.
- Open the CSV file and copy the entire contents, including the header row with column labels such as “Match Name,” “Chromosome,” “Start Location,” “End Location,” “Centimorgans (cM),” and “Matching SNPs.”
- Go to the DNA Painter website and log in to your account.
- Access the “Import” function by clicking on the settings button above the chromosomes and selecting “Import segment data.”
- Choose the option to “Paint a new match.”
- Paste the copied data from the CSV file into the “Paint a new match” form.
- Proceed with the on-screen instructions to finalise the upload of the detailed segment data to DNA Painter.
Alternatively, instead of downloading the CSV file, you can simply copy and paste the table with segment information directly from FTDNA into the DNA Painter form. This method may be faster if you do not need to retain the data in a separate file.

Use the 'Paint a new match form'
To use the 'Paint a new match' form, you will need to have the data for the segments you match with a relative. You can find this data via the one-to-one comparison (Gedmatch), the DNA Relatives tool (23andMe), or the chromosome browser (FamilyTreeDNA and MyHeritage).
Once you have the data, you can copy and paste the table with segment information directly into the 'Paint a new match' form. You can also download the segments as a CSV file and then copy and paste the contents into the form.
If you are using FamilyTreeDNA, you will need to unlock their chromosome browser before you can download your data.
After pasting your data into the 'Paint a new match' form, you will be asked to fill out the Save match form. Most fields are optional, but you will need to enter a unique name for your match. If you know how you are related to the match, you should enter the name of the ancestor or ancestral couple from whom you inherited the DNA. You will also need to specify whether the match is on your maternal or paternal chromosome.
It is important to note that DNA Painter does not know if your match is maternal or paternal. The site can only visualize the information you enter, so you will need to determine this relationship yourself.

Assign matches to maternal or paternal sides
To assign matches to maternal or paternal sides in DNA Painter, you can follow these steps:
- Understand the Basics: DNA Painter allows you to ''paint'' your DNA by mapping chromosome segments to specific ancestors. When you create a blank chromosome map, it represents your chromosomes, with a maternal and paternal chromosome in each pair.
- Utilize Close Family Members: Close family members, such as parents, full aunts or uncles, or half-siblings, can help you interpret your results. The segments you share with them will indicate whether a match is on your maternal or paternal side.
- Inferred Matching: You can use the relationships that close relatives have with known cousins to infer the source of equivalent segments on your chromosomes. For example, if you have access to your mother's test results, you can identify segments that you inherited from your maternal grandmother or grandfather.
- Maternal and Paternal Buckets: DNA Painter and Family Tree DNA use buckets to categorize matches. To have matches bucketed as maternal, link at least one maternal-side match. For both maternal and paternal buckets, link at least one match from each side.
- Importing ftDNA Results: If you have tested with Family Tree DNA, you can import your results into DNA Painter. On DNA Painter, click on the "Import mat/pat info from ftDNA" link to import the matches file information, which specifies maternal and paternal sides for bucketed matches.
- Specifying Sides: When using the DNA Painter import function, you can specify the side for each segment. In the "Side" field, enter 'maternal' or 'paternal' accordingly. If you are uncertain, you can enter 'both'.
- Phasing with Gedmatch: If you have tested with Gedmatch, you can use the 'Phasing' tool to create separate kits for your maternal and paternal DNA. By running the segment search with these phased kit numbers, you can then import and assign matches to the correct chromosomes.
- Speculating and Notes: If you don't have definitive information, you can make notes and use the certainty level feature in DNA Painter. You can also guess based on the location or ethnicity of your match. As you gather more evidence, you can adjust your assignments.
