CorelDRAW Graphics Suite offers a range of tools to create and edit stars. You can draw two types of stars: perfect and complex. Perfect stars are traditional-looking, while complex stars have intersecting sides. The number of points on a star can be modified, and the points can be sharpened. The Shape tool can be used to further modify the stars, and the Star tool under Common Shapes can be used to draw pre-defined stars. Corel PHOTO-PAINT, another application within the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, offers additional image-editing capabilities, including the ability to create bitmap illustrations, composite images, and paintings. The Spaced Out brushes in Painter 2023 can also be used to add fields of stars to your artwork.

What You'll Learn

Using the Star tool
CorelDRAW lets you draw two types of stars: perfect and complex. Perfect stars are traditional-looking stars and can have a fill applied to the entire star shape. Complex stars have intersecting sides and produce original results with a fill applied. You can modify these stars by changing the number of points on a star and sharpening the points.
To use the Star tool in CorelDRAW, start by selecting it from the toolbox. Click anywhere on your canvas to set the centre point of your star. Then, drag your cursor away from the centre point to adjust the star's size. You can also hold down the Shift key while dragging to draw the star from its centre, or hold down the Ctrl key to maintain symmetry.
To create a complex star, you can drag the nodes to twist and overlap the shape. Double-clicking on an edge adds a node and similar nodes on all edges, allowing you to further modify the star's shape. You can also convert line segments to curves and adjust them individually by pressing the Spacebar to switch to the Pick tool.
Additionally, you can use the Shape tool to reshape your stars. Double-click to add or remove nodes, or marquee-select a group of nodes to adjust them together. Keep in mind that when reshaping a perfect star, node movement is constrained, and you cannot add or delete nodes or convert line segments to curves.

Modifying star shapes
CorelDRAW has specific tools to create and modify stars, spirals, and other common shapes. The Star tool allows you to create and modify perfect and complex stars. A complex star is created just like a perfect star, but has intersecting sides. To modify a star, you need to first select it. You can select any star while the Star tool is active, or you can press the Spacebar to temporarily activate the Pick tool, which you can use to select the star.
The Shape tool can be used to transform a complex star into a different shape. You can activate the Shape tool while a star is already selected, or you can select a star with the Shape tool. This produces nodes at each tip and at the midpoint of each side. Clicking and dragging any node will produce the same result at every corner or side. Holding down the Ctrl/Cmd key while dragging a node will ensure that each node remains the same distance from its adjacent nodes. Without the Ctrl/Cmd key pressed, you can drag nodes to twist the shape. You can even drag nodes inward to get an overlapping star shape.
Double-clicking on an edge adds a node, which adds similar nodes on all edges. Dragging these newly added nodes can change the star even further. Double-clicking a node removes it, along with the corresponding nodes on other edges. You can also select a node and click the "Convert to Curve" icon on the property bar. Now you can adjust tangency at both ends of the line segment.
If you want to adjust individual nodes without maintaining even sides and corners, first press the Spacebar to temporarily switch to the Pick tool, which selects the star.

Drawing perfect stars
CorelDRAW allows you to draw two types of stars: perfect and complex. Perfect stars are traditional-looking stars that can have a fill applied to the entire star shape. To draw a perfect star, follow these steps:
- Use the Common Shapes tool to draw a pre-defined star shape. This tool is in the same group as the Star and Spiral tools.
- Hold the Ctrl/Cmd key while dragging from corner to corner of the bounding box to maintain the shape's original proportions.
- Modify the number of points on the star to create your desired look. You can also sharpen the points of the star.
- Use the Shape tool to further modify the star. Double-clicking on an edge adds a node, which adds similar nodes on all edges. Dragging these nodes can change the shape of the star.
- To adjust individual nodes without affecting the overall shape, press the Spacebar to temporarily switch to the Pick tool. Then, click the Convert to Curves icon on the property bar.
Additionally, Corel Painter offers various brush packs, such as the Starry Night brush pack, that can help you create realistic cosmos and stars, including nova bursts and shooting asteroids. The Spaced Out brushes can also be used to add shimmering auroras, swirling nebulas, and fields of stars to your paintings.

Drawing complex stars
CorelDRAW allows users to draw two types of stars: perfect and complex. Perfect stars are traditional-looking stars that can be filled with colour. Complex stars, on the other hand, have intersecting sides and produce unique results when filled with colour.
To draw a complex star, you can use the Shape tool, which can be used to reshape the star just like any other curve object. First, click and drag any node to produce the same result at every corner or side. Holding down the Ctrl/Cmd key ensures that each node remains the same distance from its adjacent nodes. Without the Ctrl/Cmd key pressed, you can drag nodes to distort the shape. Dragging nodes inward can create an overlapping star shape.
Double-clicking on an edge will add a node, which will add similar nodes on all edges. These new nodes can be dragged to further change the shape of the star. Double-clicking a node will remove it, along with the corresponding nodes on other edges. You can also select a node and click the "Convert to Curve" icon on the property bar. This allows you to adjust the tangency at both ends of the line segment.
If you want to adjust individual nodes without maintaining even sides and corners, press the Spacebar to temporarily switch to the Pick tool, which selects the star.

Using the Paint tool
The Paint tool in Corel PHOTO-PAINT can be used to apply brush strokes and effects to your images. To activate the Paint tool, press the 'P' key on your keyboard or activate it from the toolbar.
To create a new object, go to Object > Create > New Object. Alternatively, you can click on the New Object icon at the bottom left of the Objects docker (Window > Dockers > Objects). This ensures that your paint will be its own object and not part of the background.
To access the Brush Settings, go to Window > Dockers > Brush Settings or press Ctrl + F8. Here, you can adjust the brush properties such as size, nib shape, and transparency. The numbers listed with each brush indicate the default nib size. You can rotate and elongate the nib using the nodes on the preview to the left.
To create a starry sky effect, for example, you can start with a dotted brush nib and increase the number of dabs per click, as well as the spread between dabs. Adjust the nib size and transparency to your liking.
Additionally, you can explore the various brush categories and effects available in PHOTO-PAINT, such as the "Sparkles" brush or the "Fire" brush. Experiment with different brush types and their settings to create the desired star effect.
Remember that you can always modify the size, add a lens, change the transparency mode, or rotate the image after closing PHOTO-PAINT and returning to CorelDRAW.
