He was born in Nogales, Arizona, on January 5, 1913, and moved to Los Angeles in 1931 to study at the Art Guild Academy. Hannah's early career included designing movie posters for Hollywood theatres.

He is also credited with the development of the chipmunks Chip and Dale, Donald Duck's pint-sized antagonists. In their first two cartoons, 'Private Pluto' (1943) and 'Squatter's Rights' (1946), Chip and Dale were pitted against Mickey Mouse and his dog Pluto. He also created original Donald Duck paintings on canvas, such as "Rain Predicted", which depicts Chip 'n Dale playing a prank on Donald Duck.
